Glittery Plastic... A Before & After

Hey there, blogland!  It's good to be back...

I am getting ready to welcome Mr. Shabby home today...
after 9 days on the road for an orchestra tour...

so I'm trying to do it all of course...
clean up the house, make a beef stew, learn some new music,
pick-up library books for weekend school projects,
do a crafty-project-I've-been-itching-to-get-to-but-life-got-in-the-way and blog about it...
oh yeah and hit a thrift shop or two I never got to this week... {pesky life again}
and maybe even take a shower...

But I can't complain cuz I've had a great week...
my sister has been here, helping me take care of the monkeys while I had an intense opera schedule...
but in my down time, we've been doing a lot of goofing off...
involving shopping, coffee, spas, wine, sushi... you know, the good stuff.

And now I have a couple days off from opera {and all that goofing off ~ whew}
and can get my oneshabbychick on!

As I said, I've had this little project on the back burner for a while...

If you've been around here a bit...
{or you've read my header ;-)}
you know I like me some pale things...

So a little while back, I was blown away
by these gorgeous photos at this blog... Katya365...

and I guess they stuck with me...
because when I was at the thrift shop one day,
I saw a basket of plastic, glittery fruit, which are not my thing, so I almost passed them by...

but then I thought of those white-washed fruits and veggies, which are my thing...
...and I had me one of those light bulb moments!

The ladies who work at the shop all admired my lovely fruit...
I didn't have the heart to tell them what I was going to do with it...
they would've looked at me like I was fruity...

Fast forward to today, when I finally had time for that plastic fruit.

I got out my can of white house paint and an old paintbrush...
and transformed those plastic, glittery fruit...

into something I can really play around with!

And play I did...

with my new "old" urn....

and pretty ironstone...

and apples, pears and pomegranates...

on the table that Mr. Shabby and I found on a street corner waiting for the trashman...

And now I will finish that beef stew, maybe start a fire...

and have a little family time, all under one roof again...

Next week, those thrift shops better watch out.

Have a wonderful weekend, all you shabby chicks!

more soon...

BlogLove... and Applesauce Muffins

Hello, dear friends in blogginess!
.....it has been a crazy week.....

between catching up on laundry... feeding the troops
(did you know that dinner has be served every freakin' day?!)...
daily opera rehearsals and just generally holding down the fort...
there hasn't been much time for oneshabbychick to come out... ;-}

But come out she must...
to say thank you so much to everyone
who's been reading, commenting, following and lovin' on this blog!!! Mwah!

She is also feeling the need to share another recipe...

and since the last one was a special, and rather involved one, for V. Day...
this one is easy-peasy-lemon-squeezey, baby.

The recipe came from my dear opera-singer buddy, Jane...
and since she passed it along to me about 1.5 weeks ago,
I have made it approximately 4.0 times.
And every one of those times, it has been a school morning...
and I have thrown it together in all of five minutes...
love.

This recipe is deceiving...
the ingredients seem way too simple to add up to something really good...
but the reason I have made them so many times is that they are
easy, healthful and scrumptious...
the monkeys devour them, and I have become a little addicted to them, too...

A winner and a keeper!

Therefore, I must share.......

I have tweaked the recipe a bit, to suit my tastes...
I added a little salt, and reduced the sugar by half,
and added a sprinkle of Turbinado sugar on top, for a delightful crunch.

So, without further ado....

Applesauce Muffins
Makes 12 muffins

1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup applesauce
1  3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1 t. baking soda
1 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. salt
Turbinado sugar

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Mix the oil, brown sugar, salt and soda together in a bowl.
Add the applesauce and mix well.
Stir in the flour and cinnamon.
Spoon the batter into oiled muffin cups or use paper liners.
Sprinkle each muffin top with a little Turbinado sugar.
Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Enjoy!......

And now for the thrifty-find fix... :-}

I am always on the lookout for shabby old urns on my treasure hunts...
but those babies are hard to find, and the best ones are really expensive...

so when I happened to come across this
lovely, crusty imitation of an old urn {real rust included}
on the clearance shelf when I popped into Pottery Barn this week...
for the magic price of $19.99
I was pretty tickled with myself.....

Weekend Musings...

 Hello, fans of shabbiness...
It's the weekend!

Which doesn't exactly mean a lot of "relaxation" around here, at least for us "grown-ups".

As performers, Mr. Shabby and I spend most of our weekends working.

And this is one of those weekends...
when we pass like ships in the night, blowing a kiss as one comes home from a gig and the other bolts out the door to get to their's...

But I am not complaining...
We wouldn't trade this life for anything.....

although, I would prefer a Valentine's Day date
to a Valentine's Day rehearsal
Just sayin'.......

So, after the Linzer Heart Extravaganza,
I played around with my wire stand, flowers and crochet doilies...
and came up with the latest "shabby-but-fab-y-mirror" vignette.

When I took photos a few days ago, the tulips were this rich creamy shade
and just beginning to open...

Today I was changing the water for them when i noticed something very cool...
Over those few days, they had opened up and lightened in color...

and just a few of them had taken on varying hints of lavender...

so...

pretty...

which happens to be a delightful shade of my other favorite color...
(besides white, silly...)
Purple.

Boy, that's a weird word. Purple?!
OK, let's find out.....

The word 'purple' comes from the Old English word purpul which derives from the Latin purpura, in turn from the Greek πορφύρα (porphura), name of the Tyrian purple dye manufactured in classical antiquity from a mucus secreted by the spiny dye-murex snail.  - Wikipedia

The mucus of a snail, everyone. You learned it here.

And that's all oneshabbychick's got on this crazy weekend...

Except a big shout-out to some great bloggers who featured me this weekend!
